The Tale of Rowland Oakes is an engaging side quest in Hogwarts Legacy that tests a player's ability to decipher hand-drawn maps and navigate goblin-infested strongholds. Triggered by speaking with Adelaide Oakes in the Transfiguration Courtyard, this quest takes players on a search for her missing uncle. Understanding how to read Rowland's hand-drawn map and navigate the dungeon is key to completing the mission smoothly.
Starting the Quest and Finding the Campsite
To begin the journey, head to the Transfiguration Courtyard within Hogwarts Castle and speak with Adelaide Oakes. She expresses deep concern for her uncle Rowland, a trader who has recently gone silent after setting up camp near the Forbidden Forest. Following the quest marker will lead you directly to his abandoned campsite in the North Hogwarts Region.
Upon arriving at the campsite, players will immediately encounter a group of aggressive Ranrok Loyalists. After clearing out these enemies, search the perimeter using the Revelio spell. You will discover Rowland's journal along with a hand-drawn map sitting atop some wooden crates.
Deciphering Rowland's Map Location
Rowland's hand-drawn map features several distinct geographical markers, including a river, a ruined tower, and a landmark rock formation. Rather than providing a direct quest marker, the map requires players to follow the river flowing westward toward the edge of the world map. The trail ultimately leads to a heavily guarded goblin outpost known as the Korrow Ruins.
Traveling along the river on a broomstick makes locating the destination much faster. Once you reach the western riverbed, look for the Korrow Ruins Floo Flame and the large stone structures nearby. Fighting through the exterior goblin camp allows access to the inner dungeon entrance.
Infiltrating Korrow Ruins to Find Rowland
Inside the Korrow Ruins, navigate through the winding corridors while clearing out additional groups of Ranrok Loyalists. Deep within the lower level of the dungeon, you will locate Rowland trapped inside a locked cell. Interacting with him through the cell door reveals that he needs his wand to break free and escape.
To progress, retrace your steps back to the central hall with the large round metal boiler door. Head up the walkway to the upper level and locate the large furnace. Cast a fire spell such as Incendio or Confringo on the furnace to power up the mechanism and open the heavy metal door.
Retrieving the Wand and Completing the Quest
Passing through the unlocked boiler door leads to a main chamber filled with high-level goblin fighters and a boss named Pergit. Work through the combat encounter using control spells and ancient magic to defeat the enemies. Once the room is clear, check the smaller room on the right to retrieve Rowland's wand resting on a desk.
Return to Rowland's cell and hand over his wand to set him free. After a brief conversation where he thanks you for the rescue, the side quest concludes, rewarding you with gear and experience points.
